Daily Living Activities Can Prove to be Difficult Among the Elderly

As we age, tasks that were once considered routine can become more time consuming and difficult to accomplish. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a National Health Interview Survey in 2005 found that 6.5 percent of adults aged 65 years or older needed help with daily living activities.
Tips to assist with common activities that many seniors have difficulty performing:
· Meal Preparation and Nutrition – Whether its reaching for something on a high shelf or bending to take something out of the oven, mobility in the kitchen becomes an issue for aging adults. Experts suggest storing frequently used food and ingredients in easy to reach places. Also, consider hiring an in-home caregiver to prepare balanced and nutritious meals, especially if you have special needs dietary needs such as a low-sodium or diabetic.
· Laundry – Consider enlisting the help of a laundry service or in-home agency to alleviate some of the stress associated with laundry. If practical, make the washer and dryer more accessible by moving laundry appliances to the main floor of the home.
· Driving – Pooling together trips to the grocery store, bank and other routine errands is a good idea for mature adults who have anxiety about getting behind the wheel. Public transportation, an outside home care agency, or rides from family members or friends can help seniors continue to lead active lifestyles outside the home.
· Sleeping – Sleeping less, waking up more frequently and having trouble falling asleep are just a few of the sleep problems a senior may experience. Incorporating bed time rituals such as taking a warm bath, relaxation exercises or sipping a cup of herbal tea may alleviate sleep problems
· General Household Maintenance – Most importantly, make sure a senior’s living space is free of clutter, as it can quickly become a fire hazard. If a senior is having trouble reaching high places while dusting or has difficulty moving a bulky vacuum, utilize more technologically advanced cleaning aids such as a duster that extends or a lightweight vacuum.
The best approach to maintaining one’s lifestyle is to assess what tasks are difficult. Once you know how many tasks you need assistance with, you are in a better position to find helpful resources that allow you to maintain your independence.
